A Guide to WHMIS
If you are employee, you face the risk of being injured in the workplace. Right training and education can help employees avoid injuries in the workplace. If employees undergo WHMIS training, which is one form of training for employees, they will be able to avoid many workplace injuries.
The meaning of WHMIS is Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. This involves all hazardous materials including chemicals and gases found in any workplace. This system helps to avoid injury and ensure protection of the environment. People handling hazardous chemicals are kept safe because they are taught how to handle and dispose of dangerous materials and they are taught how to read safety labels.
Workers can protect their health and the health of the workplace by getting WHMIS training. There are many workplaces that use different kinds of chemicals. The side effects of different kinds of chemicals are not the same. The damage they can cause are also different so they have different handling requirements. Knowing how to handle these materials is not the only thing involved in WHMIS. Employees are educated in different situations including how to avoid contact with chemicals but also how to deal with exposure to toxic chemicals that can cause respiratory and other health problems. This training also involves how to clean and dispose of materials in specific ways. With this training, employees will know how to keep out of danger and they will know what to do when they are faced with a potentially dangerous situation.
The basics across all WHMIS regulations remain the same. It is important for dangerous materials to be labelled. It regulates continuous training on those labels and potential hazards. The maintenance of material safety data sheets or MSDS is part of the WHMIS.
If WHMIS symbols and labels are seen in products used in the workplace, then employees need to be trained. Employees should be trained by their employers under federal regulations. If an employee is exposed to these materials and can come in contact with them, then he is required to undergo training. There is no need to undergo training if an employees work does not involve these hazards. YOU need to be trained as a new employee even you are already WHMIS certified. Training is specific to their workplace.
The two parts of the WHMIS training are the general and the site-specific training. General training educates employees on labeling and symbols on hazardous materials. Here , employees are trained how to read labels.
There is also WHMIS training that you can take online. In this online training, employees are updated on WHMIS regulations and labels. But this does not cover the site-specific training of the WHMIS.
Training in your specific workplace is site-specific training. Here you will be taught what substances are there and how to handle them in your own specific workplace. Here employees learn how to dispose of chemicals and how to deal with emergency situations.
WHMIS training makes your employees become safe and well prepared for this tasks.
